Purdue commit Danny Etling talks to Scout after a great performance in Champaign.
O-D Bowl: Danny Etling
Amazed by the speed and size of some of his defensive teammates at the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl, Etling said the practices have given him a glimpse of what life may be like in the Big 10.
"It's a whole different speed for me," Egling said. "Guys are like bullets flying by you. It goes so much quicker. It's weird. It's going to take some getting used to…It's a whole different kind of alignment, and the linebackers have height that you aren't going to see every day in high school."
Etling said the experience he gains at the O-D Bowl will help give him a headstart when he enrolls at Purdue on Jan. 7. Add in the additional reps he'll receive in the spring and summer, and Etling hopes that will help propel him into the mix for early playing time.
"It's important because you get to know your teammates, especially if you want to get early playing time it's one of the most important things you should be doing," Etling said.
Though Etling will have competition for the starting spot with the other quarterbacks already on the roster, Etling feels he has a chance to compete as a freshman.
"I'll fit in pretty well," Etling said. "Especially with the offense they're running. Hopefully I can just go in there, play my game and see where I stack up. I'm not used to the speed yet, but hopefully with spring practice and the summer will help me get used to it."
Etling committed to the Boilermakers in the spring of his junior season. He said he wanted to get the recruiting process out of the way, and the close community he found at Purdue was the perfect fit for him.
"It's pretty close to home," Etling said. "My cousin went there. I really like the coaching staff. The campus is a tight-knit community and it's what Indiana football is all about. It seemed like a good place for me.
"I did it so early because I didn't want to deal with it anymore. I wanted to get it out of the way. I knew that was the right school for me, so I just took it."
