Junior QB Jack Smith leads the Cougars explosive offense

PREVIEW 2014: Bloomington North Cougars

The North Cougars captured their second ever sectional title in 2013 and first since 2010. Coach Scott Bless and the Cougars are looking for similar success this go around. With 15 starters back why not.

STANDOUT

The best news the Cougars had this season was the return on junior quarterback Jack Smith. His father Tracy Smith recently accepted the head baseball coaching job at Arizona State. Smith, has committed to staying at least for the 2014 season. Last season he threw for 2530 yards and 30 touchdowns.

BREAKOUT PLAYER

Senior WR Drew Ludwig will hardly be a breakout player after posting 43 receptions for 748 yards last season. The 6-3 wideout could post even better numbers this season.

TOP UNDERCLASSMEN

Obviously Jack Smith is the man here as well, but keep an eye on junior linemen Braydon Blake (6-3, 265) and Sean Murphy (6-2, 255).

SCOUTING THE: COUGARSPOSITION BY POSITION

QUARTERBACK

Smith is the straw that stirs the drink. The Cougars should be fun to watch in its pass happy offense.

RUNNING BACK

Look for senior Delvon Wilson to step in as the lead running back.

RECEIVERS

Experience is everywhere here. Ludwig (43 receptions), Senior Alex Richardson (53 receptions), and Holden Jastremski (17 receptions) all return.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Senior Tony McKnight joins junior standouts Braydon Blake and Sean Murphy. Look out for sophomore Ty Stephenson.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Senior Rick Rdodenbaugh (6-2, 240) who had 41 tackles is back at end. Look for Lane Stagnolia (29 tackles) and Connor Bayse (26 tackles) to hatch down DL spots as well.

LINEBACKERS

Senior Devin Green (90 tackles) and junior Cameron Morgan (93 tackles) lead the linebackers.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Junior Jacob Treadway (105 tackles) is the leading returning tackler on the team. Hunter Jastremski (83 tackles) is also back. Delvon Wilson and Alex Richardson also return.

OUTLOOK:

Coach Scott Bless is hoping the Cougars explosive offense can win another sectional and take another step. Improving points per game on defense will be key.
